Developing Literary Instructional Media through Movie Adaptation of Panji Story as an Effort to Preserve Indonesian Local Culture

Comparing to other learning process, literary learning process has its own characteristic. Teaching literature means let the students (students in such level at school or college students) to consider learning literature.

In fact, most of literary teachers/lecturers do not have great strategies and methods to teach literature in an effective way. In other hand, literary instructional media still needs to be improved gradually. Therefore, teachers need an innovative literary instructional media to teach literature in class. A fact proves that in East Java, there are various folktales that are still exist in many regions. Those stories are very possible to become as source of idea in developing literary instructional media in the form of movie. Movie that will be developed in this study is kind of learning movie adopted from Panji-Sekartaji story which comes from Kediri, East Java. Besides preserving East Java’s folktale, developing this media is kind of an innovation in literary learning activities. The aims of this study are to both enrich literary instructional media and introduce folktale to wider people in order to prevent the bad influence of foreign culture toward Indonesian culture. Research design on this study is development research. The result of this research shows that Panji-Sekartaji movie’s media is effective in literary teaching and learning process. Students feel more enthusiasm in learning literature, well both in the side of understanding, appreciation, and critic.
